Licence Issues

The photograph on a driver’s photocard has expired, will this stop them from attending Periodic Training?

The photograph on a photocard licence expires after 10 years, although in most circumstances the entitlement to drive remains (until age 70 years) even if the photograph has expired. Therefore, if a driver presents a photocard licence with an expired photo for Periodic Training, the approved training centre should check the candidates ID using a valid passport, or from 27 April 2010 a valid UK Identity Card. If the candidate does not have a valid passport or UK Identity Card, the training should not go ahead.

Where a driver has an out of date photocard but is able to provide a counterpart with a valid passport, or from 27 April 2010 a valid UK Identity Card, the approved centre should allow the training to go ahead and remind them that they need to update their photograph

The issue numbers on driver’s photocard and counterpart are different – will this stop them from attending a Periodic Training Course?

If a driver presents for Periodic Training with a licence that has different issue numbers on the photocard and paper counterpart, the training should be conducted. Emphasis has to be placed on the ID and entitlement of the candidate.
